The Order of Public Instruction is a Portuguese civil order of merit, originally instituted in 1927 as the Order of Instruction and Benevolence, to recognize services advancing education and public benevolence that contributed to the country's progress. Two years later, the order was split into two distinct orders: the Order of Benevolence which later became the Order of Merit, and the Order of Public Instruction which retained the insignia of the original, "combined", order. In 1962, the criteria for awarding the Order of Public Instruction were refined in the Statute of Honorific Orders, focusing on services rendered by educators, school administrators and other contributors to education.
