Original ink and pencil drawing by N. Chebotayev, made for an issue of the Krasnoyarskiy Komsomolets newspaper. Early WW2 poster The Enemy Will Not Pass!

Large format for a newspaper drawing, measures 9 ¼" x 13 ¼". The artist's hand signature and date are in the lower left-hand corner. Drawn on the back side of a photo mat; the slogan at the bottom is on a separate piece of paper, glued to the mat. Large format for a newspaper drawing, measures 9 ¼" x 13 ¼". The artist's hand signature and date are in the lower left-hand corner. Drawn on the back side of a photo mat; the slogan at the bottom is on a separate piece of paper, glued to the mat. It appears that the artist used whatever materials were at hand to complete this urgent task. Judging by the date and the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower in the background, the poster was probably done before or during the Battle of Moscow when Hitler's armies were approaching the nation's capital and the morale of the Soviet population was in desperate need of a booster.

In good to very good condition. Note that the missing paper at the edges was cut out intentionally, presumably to fit the drawing with other items on the newspaper page. Minor soiling and creases at the edges and corners are evident but not obscuring anything of importance and are not too intrusive to the eye. The right side of the slogan has separated from the mat, quickly and easily repairable, if desired.

The slogan The Enemy Will Not Pass! was among the most popular during the early, defensive part of the Great Patriotic War of 1941 - 1945. Many artists created imagery to go with the slogan. Poster prints with it can be easily found, but not the original graphics, dated and signed by the artist.

Please note that the pen in our photo is for size reference.
