The verso has a description which summarizes the event depicted in the painting. In early September, 1941, when the enemy was on the outskirts of Leningrad, personnel reserves became especially important in repelling the Nazi hordes. A unit of Navy infantry which had just been transported from Tallinn, was thrown into this battle, weapons and ammunition being provided en route to the battlefield. For three days the Navy infantry troops fought near Krasnoye Selo [a suburb of Leningrad]. The guns of battleship Marat, cruisers Maxim Gorky and Petropavlovsk provided intensive artillery support. The enemy did not advance an inch in this battle.
