Established in February 1958, DOSAAF Honorary Badge was the highest award of the organization. Among its early recipients were several Soviet marshals including Budyonny, Voroshilov, Konev and Rokossovsky; and the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. At least initially, it was awarded rather sparingly: from 1963-76, there were some 23.5 thousand of these bestowed - a relatively small number by Soviet standards.
