Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Bagramyan, typed document signed, 28 December 1959.

Single page 8" x 11", front only. The document is a letter of birthday wishes addressed to General of the Army German Malandin, former comrade-in-arms, Chief of Staff of the 16th Army which Bagramyan commanded during WW2.

In excellent condition, showing mild wrinkles but no other wear visible to the naked eye. The typed text as well as Bagramyan's hand signature are crisp and clear.

Ivan Bagramyan (Иван Христофорович Баграмян, 1897 - 1982), Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, seven Orders of Lenin, two Orders of Suvorov, an Order of Kutuzov. Fought at Kursk and Orel. Later, as Commander of the 1st Baltic Front, was in charge of Belorussian breakthrough and the Vitebsk encirclement, his forces killing or capturing 30,000 Germans in the latter movement. Occupied Memel and captured Koenigsberg in April of 1945. Postwar commander of the Baltic Military District, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1982.

General of the Army German Malandin (Герман Капитонович Маландин, 1894 - 1961) began his military service during WW1. In Red Army since 1918. Participated in the Russian Civil War, graduated from the Academy of the General Staff of the RKKA in 1938. During the Patriotic War he served under Bagramyan's command as Chief of Staff of the 13th Army, 1st Ukrainian Front. After the war, Malandin changed several high chief of staff posts. His last position was Head of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces.
