Note that in 1955 Soviet women's retirement age was 50. But don't envy them yet! Retirement was mandatory, and there were limits as to how much you could earn in addition to the retirement benefit, which was abysmally small. As Item 3 states on the last page, the retiree had to immediately report any additional income to the district department of social welfare. So, you could often see elderly women working as coat checks, janitors, and the like. In short, if the husband had passed away by the time the wife retired after a long and successful career as an engineer, or doctor, or teacher, or factory worker, she would be lucky to find a place where she could earn pennies mopping floors or hanging coats.
