Real Photo Postcard showing a funeral of a fallen comrade by a Red Army unit in front of a church, April 1920.

The size is standard 5 ½" x 3 ½", printed on cardboard glossy photo paper. The photo was printed on a pre-1917 stock blank card, showing the Russian Imperial two-headed eagle and, uncommonly, a pre-printed postal mark. The obverse shows what looks like a funeral of a fallen comrade, with a large group of people in Red Army uniforms honoring their fallen comrade. An even larger group is seen in the background, holding banners with Bolshevik slogans, such as "Death to Capital and Bourgeoisie!" The irony of the situation is that this communist burial is happening in front of a church despi

The irony of the situation is that this communist burial is happening in front of a church despite other slogans branding the church, clergy, and religion in general as only a tool of exploitation of the working class, to be rooted out and destroyed. The verso shows a handwritten inscription putting the place and date on this event: the town of Litin, April 1920. Litin is a municipality in the Vinnitsa Region, Ukraine, about 175 miles south-west of Kiev.

In very good condition. The obverse shows a couple of wrinkles and mild wear to the edges and corners. The image is in sharp focus. The verso is moderately age-toned and shows traces of old glue from being mounted on a backing. Part of the postal mark was affected by removing the card from the backing. The old, imperial postal mark is stamped over with a new mark, featuring the Ukrainian trident state emblem and the new price of 10 kopeks. The ink of the handwritten inscription is bright and perfectly legible.
