Full Standing Portrait of Stalin, mid- to late 1940s.

Oil on canvas, unstretched, the image measures approx. 27" x 41". The verso shows an inscription reading "D. Nalbandyan, I.V. Stalin. Done by Z. Kosovtseva." This inscription means that this is an official approved copy of D. Nalbandyan's huge, 7.8' x 5.4' portrait of Stalin, done by a professional artist approved for painting the leader's image - in itself, not an easy-to-get privilege.

The original painting, entitled I.V. Stalin in Marshal's Uniform in his Kremlin Office was done by Dmitry Nalbandyan (Дмитрий Аркадьевич Налбандян, 1906 - 1993), a renowned Soviet Armenian artist and animator. The painting premiered at the All-Union Arts Exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery in 1946. One of the stated missions of the exhibition was to "immortalize the images of individuals who are the living embodiment of the nation's heroism, organizers of victories, - those who serve the glory and might of the Motherland by their inspired labor or talent." This portrait brought Nalbandyan the Stalin Prize 1st class.
