The eyelet has a "56" gold hallmark with Kokoshnik facing left. Although there is significant wear to the eyelet, the Kokoshnik is still recognizable, and so is the letter Л of the Cyrillic initials ЯЛ ("YaL") of the St. Petersburg assay inspector Yakov Lyapunov who occupied the position through 1903. The swords are of standard Keibel manufacture.
The order is in excellent condition, absolutely superb for any Russian Imperial order and especially so for a combat award. The red enamel on the arms is exceptionally well preserved: it shows a beautiful luster and has none of the usual chips, rubbing or flaking; there are only a few microscopic contact marks completely invisible to the naked eye and not easy to find even with a 10x loupe. Both sides of the center medallion are likewise beautifully preserved, free of the usual hairlines or scuffs.
To summarize, this piece is a superb example of the Military version of the Order of St. Anne of the pre-WWI era. Its production time frame
makes it a likely award for the Russo - Japanese War. It could also be bestowed however for the Russian expedition to suppress the Boxer
Rebellion or for skirmishing with Chinese warlords along Russia's Far Eastern border.
