Order of Saint Stanislaus for Non-Christians, Civil Division, 3rd class Breast Badge by Albert Keibel, with original period Case of Issue and Ribbon, 1899-1903.

Gold, enamels. Measures 40.4 mm in height including the eyelet, 43.6 mm in width; weighs 11.1 without the connecting loop, 11.4 g overall with the loop. Gold, enamels. Measures 40.4 mm in height including the eyelet, 43.6 mm in width; weighs 11.1 without the connecting loop, 11.4 g overall with the loop. The magnificent translucent scarlet enamel is of typical early Keibel quality and fully reveals the guilloche pattern to the gold underneath. The sculptured eagles between the arms are beautifully detailed. There is maker mark AK (Albert Keibel) on the reverse lower arm and Imperial double-headed eagle warrant to the reverse upper arm. Gold hallmark "56" to the eyelet, with the early-style Kokoshnik facing right and poorly struck but recognizable Cyrillic characters ЯЛ ("YaL"), the initials of the St. Petersburg assay inspector Yakov Lyapunov. The identity of the assayer pinpoints the period of manufacture from 1899-1903.

The badge is in excellent condition. The enamel on the arms and both sides of the center medallion is literally pristine, free of any wear noticeable even under a 10x magnification. Some of the green enamel covering the leaves in the band flaked off as is usually the case, but most of it is still present. The details of the artwork are perfect and crisp. The eagles between the arms are of the period and believed to be original to the cross, although one of them, in the 9 to 12 o'clock segment when viewed from the obverse, may have been reattached (the repair, if it indeed ever took place, does not affect the appearance of the badge in the least.) The badge comes on the original connecting loop in unmarked gold.

The Case of Issue is wrapped in burgundy leather with an impressed inscription in gold "Insignia of the Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd Class." The felt-lined interior has a nest for the cross and its connecting link. The box is in very good to excellent condition. It shows only a very minor wear to the exterior and slight separations at the edges, while remaining very presentable and attractive. There is only a tiny amount of soiling to the felt on the interior. Comes complete with a fully functional hinged lock, gold foil ornamental frame, and retaining tape in beige gauze for the ribbon. The lid does not align perfectly with the bottom part, but still functions well.

The original period ribbon is in moiré silk, approx. 34 cm (13.5 inches) long. It has folds from storage and a few tiny spots but is in excellent condition overall, free of stains or significant wear.

The entire ensemble is nothing short of superb and extremely rare. It represents a wonderful opportunity for the serious collector of Imperial Russian decorations.
