The internal pages are all in place, minimally wrinkled and frayed along the edges, mostly quite clean. All the printed and handwritten text, as well as the seals and signatures are clear and perfectly legible.
This ID belonged to a truly outstanding naval officer. Reading the entries, we learn that he joined the Red Navy on 23 February 1918, the date celebrated in the Soviet Union and modern Russia as the Day of the Army and the Navy. On that very day he started his first naval post as helmsman of the submarine Pantera ("Panther"). He did not have any military or naval education or experience, only three years of elementary school. His first military rank was conferred on Lashmanov in 1936 after eighteen years of service, and it was Captain Second Rank, equal to Army Lieutenant Colonel. He rose to submarine commanding officer. During WW2 he moved to a teaching position at the Submariner Training Detachment, then named after Kirov but, interestingly enough, founded in 1906 by decree of czar Nicholas II.
For his outstanding service, Mikhail Lashmanov was awarded with an Order of the Red Banner (1928), two Orders of Lenin (1935 and 1945), and the Medal for Victory over Germany.
Please note: we were able to find Lashmanov's photo online and included it here for illustrative purposes only; it does not come with the ID.
Research Materials: two 1944 award commendations for the Order of Lenin awarded in 1945 for twenty-seven years of irreproachable service.
