Fyodor Shalyapin (Федор Иванович Шаляпин, 1873 - 1938) was a world-famous Russian opera singer and actor with a phenomenal bass voice. Yet, this figurine is rather uncommon - mostly because after a brief period of performing in the Soviet state and even the post of director of the Mariinsky Theater in Petrograd, the second most prestigious opera and ballet theater after the Bolshoi, Shalyapin went abroad on a performing tour and did not return. His charitable donations to the Russian monarchist émigrés and refusal to return to Soviet Russia led to the 24 August 1927 decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR revoking Shalyapin's title of People's Artist of RSFSR and prohibiting him to return to said RSFSR. An empty gesture on the part of the Soviet government which suited Shalyapin just fine. He died in Paris of natural causes (Leukemia) and was buried in the Batignolles Cemetery. His tombstone bears the inscription "Here rests Fyodor Shalyapin, a genius son of Russia." Shalyapin's son Fyodor allowed to move Shalyapin's remains to the Soviet Union in 1984. There, he was interned at the Novodevichye Cemetery in Moscow, famous as the resting place of Russian and Soviet celebrities.
