The Pushkin Medal was instituted in 1977 on occasion of the tenth anniversary of МАПРЯЛ, to be conferred on Russian and foreign government officials, scientists, linguists and pedagogues who had made a significant contribution in proliferation of the Russian language, literature, and culture in foreign countries. The medal was first awarded at the IV Congress of МАПРЯЛ in Berlin in August of 1979. No more than ten medals are awarded annually.
