The Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus is a combination of two very ancient orders. The Order of St. Maurice was established in 1434 whereas the
Order of St. Lazarus goes back even further, to a religious and military community at the time of the Latin rule of Jerusalem. In 1571, Emmanuel
Philibert, fourth Duke of Savoy, revived the order of St. Maurice. Next year, it was united to the Order of St. Lazarus. This unification is
symbolized by the crosses of the two orders, joined together: the green-enameled Maltese Cross of the Order of St. Lazarus, and the white-
enameled cross of the Order of St. Maurice. Until 1946 when the Italian throne was officially abolished, Kings of Savoy served as Grand Masters
of this order. And even nowadays, this order is traditionally conferred by the Dukes of Savoy in exile. The order is conferred to recognize those
who support philanthropic causes and have distinguished themselves by actions benefiting mankind through arts, letters, sciences, and
humanitarian disciplines.
