The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George was instituted in 1818 to award those holding high command or governmental positions in the Mediterranean regions that came under the British rule after the Napoleonic Wars. It was further extended to include holders of similar offices in other territories of the British Empire. At present, the order is awarded to men and women who hold high office or render an important non-military service in a foreign country.
