The cross is suspended via a bronze jump ring to a dark-blue moiré silk ribbon with orange edges.

Both the cross and ribbon are in excellent condition. Strong magnification reveals a few truly microscopic contact points to the enamel and gilt, practically invisible to the naked eye. The ribbon appears to be original, clean, and undamaged.

Originally established as a chivalrous order, the Order was revived in 1890 as an order of merit when Adolphe of Nassau became Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It is conferred upon heads of state and civilians for meritorious service rendered to the state and the Grand Ducal House, including achievements in arts and sciences. It can also be conferred on foreigners as a sign of good will. It consists of eight grades, the Knight being the eighth grade.
