Porcelain Sugar Bowl, by Gorodnitsa Factory, 1970-2000s.

Stands approx. 4 ½" tall to the tip of the lid, 4" across at the lip, 3 ¼" at the foot. Sparingly decorated in black with gilt accents, more suggestive of the Baltic folk motifs than Ukrainian.

In very good to excellent condition. Insignificant tiny bubbles and dark inclusions in the mass are evident but not too intrusive to the eye. A smear to the gold band on the lid is perhaps the most obvious wear. None of the wear is post-production, at least not visible to the naked eye. Maker marked on the bottom (fig. # 150 in Volume One of Marks on Soviet Porcelain, Faience, and Majolica,

Gorodnitsa Porcelain Factory was founded in 1807 in the village of this name in Ukraine. Its first product lines were mostly household faience items. After WW2, the factory acquires new master sculptors. They develop models in various "themes", such as happy childhood, fairy tale characters, animals, busts of famous people of arts and music, as well as political leaders. In mid-1960s Gorodnitsa was one of the largest producers of artistic porcelain in the USSR, won several prizes at international fairs. Unfortunately, it all ended in 2012 when the factory announced bankruptcy and was closed.
