Presentation Banner of the Kiev Regional Clothing Warehouse of Glavshveysbyt at the USSR Ministry of Light Industry, early 1950s.

Measures 62" x 47" excluding the fringe but including the 3"-wide flagpole sleeve. In double-layered silk with embroidered lettering and graphic. The obverse features the name of the enterprise and its ministerial affiliation. This is a very interesting flag in that it hides in plain sight a glaring discrepancy. The Ukrainian republican enterprise Glavshveysbyt was created on 19 December 1951 by Directive # 2046 of the Minister of Light Industry of the USSR. That year was the fifth year since the Soviet Union had sixteen republics, and its redesigned State Emblem showed sixteen scrolls. Apparently, not everyone in the Kiev Regional Warehouse of Glavshveysbyt knew about it. We can only hope that the responsible person got away with just losing his or her job or membership in the Communist Party for this mistake.

In very good to excellent condition. Both sides have a few faint stains, mostly small and not too intrusive to the eye. Four strands of fringe are missing, and there is an area which looks like the silk got a few drops of some chemical that "ate" through the top red layer of the fabric. We took photos of the "worst offenders" next to a quarter coin to give you an idea of the size and degree of wear. Overall, the banner presents very well. The embroidery has retained its gold shine, the silk has its warm moiré sheen. The fringe, although missing a few strands, is mostly intact.

This is the type of banner to be carried at the head of the employees' column during a 1 May or 7 November demonstration. At other times, such a banner would be proudly displayed in a place of honor in the HQ foyer or the meeting hall of the enterprise. Well, perhaps not this particular banner. Not for long, at least.

Please note that the yardstick in our photo is for size reference.
