Cabinet Photo of 3 Bolshevik Soldiers with Daggers, circa 1917-19, the two standing have curved Bebut kinjals.

Measures 5" x 6 ½", the image size is 3 ½" x 4 ½". The three youngsters in the photo look exactly like most boys do when they lay their hands on real weapons and there is no father near to whip some sense into them. The two standing are holding curved Bebut kinjals. The boy sitting front and center has a revolver in his left hand, and a sword in his right. The hilt of the sword, especially the cross-guard, reminds of the Imperial Russian Tesak Pioneer short sword. The hilt of the sword, especially the cross-guard, reminds of the Imperial Russian Tesak Pioneer short sword. Those were issued to pioneer troops and used extensively in the Crimean War in the early 1850s. However, they had a serrated part to one side of the blade which we do not see in the blade on the photo. The verso has a handwritten dedication inscribed in pencil.

In fair to good condition. There is a short tear at the bottom edge of the photo, and small areas of missing emulsion as well as minor soiling to the corners. Fortunately, the missing emulsion is mostly on the background parts of the photo leaving the main characters perfectly viewable. Tilting the photo to reflect a bright light reveals minor scuffing, too, but that is completely invisible when looking at it at a normal viewing angle. The inscription on the verso is in lead pencil and, unfortunately, too faded to be readable. The image is in exceptionally sharp focus, providing an excellent opportunity to grab a loupe and have a long close look at the minutest details of the weapons and the boys' attire.

Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
