In very fine condition. The enamel on the flags is nicely preserved, showing a beautiful luster and having only a few minuscule contact marks that are almost unnoticeable to the naked eye, no rubbing, chips or flaking. There are some tiny surface flakes to enamel on the scrolls, but no penetrating chips. The raised details on both sides are well preserved and crisp. There is an attractive even patina to the brass throughout which adds a great deal of character. The medal comes on original ribbon, complete with the original tin star (this part was rather flimsy and prone to breaking off on the early versions of the medal, and is often missing on the surviving examples of this award). The medal is secured to the ribbon by two connecting links, the upper one being sewn-in to the ribbon with thread; the entire arrangement appears to be of the period.
Established in 1951, the Sino-Soviet Friendship Medal was issued to Soviet military and civilian personnel helping the Chinese during and
after the Korean War. The 1951 issue is the earliest type and perhaps the most sought-after version of this award. Unlike the later types, the
1951 version was awarded almost exclusively to the military, including Soviet airmen and others directly involved in fighting.
