Both volumes are lavishly illustrated with drawings, photos of actual battlegrounds, and photo portraits of the Soviet veterans and heroes of the Winter War, starting with large full-page portraits of Stalin, Andrei Zhdanov (Leningrad Party Chief, Head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the TsK of the Party, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR), and Marshal of the Soviet Union Semyon Timoshenko, commander of the North-Western Front which broke through the Mannerheim Line.
In very good condition. The cover is laminated with plain paper which has absorbed its share of wear in the form of stains and scuffs. The laminate over the corners has worn off, baring the cardboard beneath, and allowing it to fray. But frankly, the wear only enhances the air of authenticity and, in our opinion, is a plus. The binding is quite tight and strong, we did not notice any pages missing, the drawings and photo illustrations are as clear as the technology permitted at that time, the text is clear, crisp and perfectly legible. The to-scale foldout map is a precious enhancement for the reader. Unfortunately, it has a rip to the left edge. However, there is no missing paper, and the rip can be repaired with tape on the verso, if desired.
Overall, this book is a treasure for a collector of the Winter War artifacts as much as it is for a history buff, providing an insight into the Orwellian double-speak of the Soviet version of the events, to compare it with other, more objective sources.
Note: we will include a printout of the foldout map for comfort of viewing and preservation of the original map in the book.
Please note that the pen in our photo is for size reference.
