Medal on period suspension ribbon. Silver gilt, 54.4 mm in height (incl. eyelet bar), 47.0 mm in width, weighs 14.7 g. The suspension ribbon is in moiré golden yellow silk, 30 mm in width, with a metal top bar and a separate pin attachment sown onto the ribbon on the reverse. The crossed palm fronds of the badge are in excellent condition, no wear or damage of any kind visible to the naked eye. The suspension ribbon, possibly original, is in very fine condition, the obverse showing two tiny punctures and traces of an old stitching job. The reverse is very clean and free of any significant wear. The wear to the obverse is not too obvious or detractive.

The issue case. Measures approx. 28 x 9 x 4 cm, in light wood, laminated in textured paper. Inside, the lid is lined with white silk; the fitted pad for the decorations is wrapped in burgundy short-pile velvet. Fine condition. The laminate has a small stain on the lid and an area where the top, textured, layer of the paper is ripped off. A similar spot can be seen on the bottom. The hinge is a little loose. The latch is in good working order. The white silk of the lining shows a few small dark stains. Overall, the case is still quite presentable.

The Order of Public Instruction is a Portuguese civil order of merit, originally instituted in 1927 as the Order of Instruction and Benevolence, to recognize services advancing education and public benevolence that contributed to the country's progress. Two years later, the order was split into two distinct orders: the Order of Benevolence which later became the Order of Merit, and the Order of Public Instruction which retained the insignia of the original, "combined", order. In 1962, the criteria for awarding the Order of Public Instruction were refined in the Statute of Honorific Orders, focusing on services rendered by educators, school administrators and other contributors to education.

NOTE: the neck badge of a Grand Officer and Commander classes are identical, the difference is in the breast star: gold for Grand Officer and silver for Commander.
