Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, Type 2, "MZPP" variation without a mint mark, #180703, circa late 1944 - early 1945 issue.

Silver, 14 K gold (hammer & sickle emblem), enamels; measures 46.8 mm in height x 45.2 mm in width; weighs 26.5 g without the screw plate. This is a rare early version by Moscow's MZPP Factory (Moskovskiy Zavod Platin Pribor) which does not have a mint mark. Among its other distinguishing features is relatively crude serial number engraving, typical of MZPP.

The currently known serial number range of the first MZPP series without a mint mark is quite small: according to mondvor.narod.ru, its known serial number range is 180565 - 182815 (and the actual number of specimens pr

The currently known serial number range of the first MZPP series without a mint mark is quite small: according to mondvor.narod.ru, its known serial number range is 180565 - 182815 (and the actual number of specimens produced may be far smaller than this range would suggest). Note that unlike the later MZPP versions, the golden hammer & sickle emblem does not yet have its trademark MZPP flaw, a small "lip" of excess gold between the handle of the sickle and backside of the blade of the sickle: this defect apparently developed later in the production, possibly due to the tear and wear to the die. Other very similar "no mint mark" examples, both with very close serial numbers, are shown on page 144 of The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals by McDaniel and Schmitt and on the mondvor.narod.ru website (classified there as MZPP Variation 1).

In very fine to excellent condition. The red enamel has a single shallow surface chip on the lower left arm of the star that does not penetrate to silver and is not very glaring; otherwise extremely well-preserved having only a few microscopic contact marks invisible to the naked eye and retaining an attractive luster. The red enamel on the center medallion is perfect; the white band has only a couple of tiny flakes that are invisible to the naked eye, otherwise perfect. The starburst is completely free of noticeable dings or scratches and exhibits a very attractive even patina. The reverse is essentially pristine; the rivets are perfect and tight. The screw post is over 12.5 mm in length, has not been reduced, and includes an original silver screw plate.
