The Royal Order of Vasa was instituted by King Gustaf III on 29 May 1772 as an order of chivalry, to be awarded to Swedish citizens for
service to the state and society, especially in the fields of commerce, agriculture, and mining. Its name refers to the Vasa dynasty founded
by
Gustaf I Vasa (1496 - 1560), the King of Sweden from 1523 to 1560 who established Swedish
sovereignty independent of Denmark.
