Compiled by the USSR Academy of Arts, published by the ART Publishing House, only 20,000 copies ever printed, very little by Soviet standards. Includes an index of illustrations, and a list of the artists referenced in the book.

In very good condition. The hard cover shows mild wear, mostly scuffs to the leatherette at the corners and along the spine, and minimal soiling. The binding is a bit loose but all the pages are in place, the first few pages showing partial separations at the top and bottom. The essays have multiple underlined words and phrases, mostly in lead pencil but a few in ink as well. All the usage wear is not too intrusive to the eye and not very detractive.

The essays were most likely composed while Stalin was still alive, and were approved for publication mere 4 months after his death. Yet, there are only a couple of references to Stalin in them, and only in a historical context, without any accolades to him as the Great Leader. The illustrations however, abound in Stalin's images.
