Order of the Golden Kite, 5th class, in original fitted case of issue, circa 1890s-1947.

Gold-plated silver, enamels. Measures 49.7 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 45.9 mm in width. The ribbon appears to be original. Very well-made piece. Comes with the original black lacquered wooden presentation box with velvet fitted pad for the order. The order comes with a two-fold ribbon.

The Order of the Golden Kite was established by Imperial Prescript of February 12, 1890. It was bestowed upon persons who had rendered distinguished military service, and was awarded only to Japanese. It also carried an annuity in different amounts, depending on the class. The annuity ranged from 1,500 yen for the 1st class to 150 yen for the 7th class. The order was abolished by Government Ordinance in 1947.
