This Russian Federation award replaced the Soviet-style Honored Railway Badge of the so-called "SNG" type which was introduced in 1993, soon after the breakup of the USSR, and was initially awarded by most former Soviet republics. Most of the Russian Federation issues were bestowed for completing at least 10 years of work in the railroad system as well as meeting some other requirements; some were also awarded for personal valor in preventing railroad accidents or saving lives and equipment while working on the railways.
