N.A. Semashko, Centennial Bronze Table Medal in commemoration of Nikolai Semashko (Николай Александрович Семашко, 1874 - 1949), the first Soviet Narkom of Public Health, by Leningrad Mint, 1974.

In solid bronze measuring 60 mm wide, 6 mm thick between the highest points on either side, and weighing 109 g. Manufactured at the Leningrad Mint. The medal is very scarce with only 698 pieces struck. The artwork by A. Korolyuk commemorates the centennial of Nikolai Semashko as the first Soviet People's Commissar of Public Health. Indeed, Dr. Semashko, who served in this post from 1918 to 1930, is renowned for creating a superb system of public health with great emphasis on hygiene, nutrition, prophylactic measures, and prevention and treatment of communicable diseases.

The obverse features Semashko's portrait in sculpted relief, his name and initials, and the mark of the Leningrad Mint at about 4 o'clock. The reverse shows a caduceus and the words "The First Narkom of Public Health", followed by the year's of Semashko's life, 1874 - 1949. The sculptor's name, A. Korolyuk (A. Королюк) is at the very bottom of the reverse, followed by the year of the medal's issue.

In excellent condition, no significant wear or damage of any kind visible to the naked eye. An occasional tiny spot of verdigris can be seen in recessed areas at magnification.
