In excellent, near mint condition. The enamel shows magnificent luster and is essentially perfect, having no wear visible to the naked eye and only a couple of microscopic contact marks that are hard to find even with a 10x loupe. The center medallion is literally pristine and has perfectly preserved, exceptionally crisp details. The screw post is full length, over 12.5 mm, and includes an original period screw plate.

Fyodor Kabanovskiy was born in 1893 and joined the Red Army in October 1941. Apparently already an experienced dentist at that point, he took part in the defense of Leningrad as a specialist in jaw and dental reconstructive surgery for the soldiers with severe face wounds. During the war, he performed 450 highly complicated surgeries, always showing great enthusiasm in his work, using innovative methods, and taking great care of his patients. On a number of occasions, he performed surgical procedures under an enemy artillery barrage and continued his work even when his hospital received direct hits.

In July 1945, Kabanovskiy, at that point a Medical Corps Major, was awarded with the Order of the Red Star (#2120138) which was his only decoration of the war, not counting the Medals for the Defense of Leningrad and Victory over Germany. He remained in the military after the war and as of 1947, had the position of the Chief of the Department of Dentistry of the Military Hospital at the highly prestigious S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. Still on active duty at the end of 1956, he received his second Order of the Red Star (#3523256) on 30 December of that year for the length of service in the Soviet Armed Forces.
