Excellent Border Guard badge, 1957-1964 issue.

Brass, enamels; 52.8 x 41.6 mm. A relatively large and massive piece.

In very fine condition, better than the average for this badge. The green enamel along the edge is relatively well preserved, having only a single small chip in the upper left corner which is not too glaring due to the patina on the exposed brass masking the damage. There is also a tiny chip to the red star, nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye. The enamel has only some microscopic flakes and contact marks elsewhere, retaining a very impressive overall appearance and luster.

The raised details of the medallion are perfect and extremely crisp; the nickel finish is nearly pristine showing only a tiny amount of wear to the highest points of the artwork. Attractive even patina to the brass on both sides of the badge. The full length, 10 mm long screw post appears to be original to the badge although it has been reinforced or repaired with solder at the base. It includes an original period screw plate with the Pobeda Factory logo.

This version of the badge was issued after the Border Guards were transferred to the control of KGB in 1957 and until the change in the design of the badge in 1964. /Avers 8 p. 410, fig. 1942d /
