Medal of a Veteran of Service in the Department "I" (Computer Science) of the KGB First Main Directorate (PGU Foreign Intelligence), circa mid- to late 1980s.
In gilded brass; medallion measures 33.6 mm in height incl. eyelet, 30.1 mm in width; weighs 14.1 g without the suspension and connecting link; overall weight with suspension is 19.4 g. The perforated computer tape in the artwork forms the Russian character И ("I") which stands for Informatika - i.e. "computer science". The suspension has a superimposed brass laurel branch and shows a late-style round logo of the Moscow Mint (partly hidden under the catch of the pin). The award shows typical fine quality of the mint production.

During 1980s, the Department "I" was a part of the PGU (Pervoe Glavnoe Upravlenie, i.e. First Main Directorate for foreign intelligence) of
the Soviet Committee for State Security. This "Information Science" department was responsible for computer support of KGB espionage
operations. The scope of its activities reportedly included electronic data processing, data storage, and computer hacking.
