Commendation Certificate to a Guardsman of the Red Army Pavel Korotov (Павел Иванович Коротов) on occasion of the 10th anniversary of RKKA, 1928.

Very large format, measuring 13 ½" x 19 ¾". The blank citation form was published in 1923 in the city of Zlatoust, Western Siberia, apparently specifically in preparation for the 10th anniversary of the RKKA (Red Army of Workers and Peasants), as the years 1918 and 1928 are typographically printed. The USSR State Emblem at top center is the first version, featuring only six scrolls symbolizing the original six republics comprising the Soviet Union at that time.

The text of the citation, phrased in excessively flowery rhetoric typical of the early Soviet proclamations, honors Comrade Korotov's decade of struggle and suffering for the noble goal of establishing the dictatorship of proletariat. There is mention of a "modest gift" which, apparently, came with the citation, but the gift remains unnamed.

Issued by the Zlatoust District Party organization, City Council, Garrison, local unit of the trade union of railroad workers, and members of Osoaviakhim (Society for Assistance of Defense, Aircraft and Chemical Industry, a paramilitary organization), the document bears three seals and five hand signatures representing these organizations.

In good condition. The paper of the document is thick and sturdy. The area of the text and decorative graphics around it is darker than the margins, suggesting that the paper may have been "oiled" to make it more durable. But even at the edges, there is no significant wear, just a few minuscule bumps. There are also two small ink stains by the right-hand edge, and mild foxing to the paper. The six symmetrical stains on the verso suggest that they may be traces of an adhesive, left over from mounting the certificate on a wall.

The citation has been folded in eight for a long time, however there are only two tiny separations at the intersection of the fold lines, and a negligible amount of fraying at the fold lines on the verso.

The city of Zlatoust is world-famous as the home of the "Russian Bulat" steel that is used at the Zlatoust Weapons Factory to create top-quality bladed weapons, most of which are decorated with engravings, the other claim to fame of Zlatoust masters. The unique style of Zlatoust blades and engraving on steel is instantly recognizable, and is much sought after by the connoisseurs and collectors the world over.
