In good to very good condition. The artwork is pristine, The margin around the image shows wrinkles, corner bumps and short rips at the edge, mostly on the right-hand side, but none reaching the artwork and none that cannot be easily fixed, if desired.

Rear Admiral Stepan Makarov (Стапен Осипович Макаров, 1848 - 1904) was a Russian Imperial Naval commander, hero of the Russo-Japanese War, oceanographer, polar explorer, shipbuilder, inventor of sea mining vessels, developer of the "unsinkability" theory, a pioneer in the use of ice-breakers, developer of the Russian semaphore alphabet, inventor and developer of multiple other enhancements of naval and maritime practices. For example, in preparation to the Russo-Japanese war, he initiated use of radio communication in the Pacific Navy. Radio stations were established on the shore, and installed on the war ships of Makarov's 1st Pacific Fleet.

Makarov died on board the Petropavlovsk on 13 April 1904 when the ship ran into a Japanese mine.
