The conquered Germany in ruins, perhaps? The work is dated by the artist, "1945-47" stitched next to his name. Our online search did not yield any information about the artist. His last name is most likely of Belorussian or Ukrainian descent.

We put a couple of loose ends of the threads on the verso to the "flame test" and confirmed that the long straight threads are wool whereas the two-pair twisted ones are most likely cotton.

In good to very good condition. The right edge of the canvas is hemmed, the top and bottom edges bear traces of the tapestry being mounted on a stretcher. The left edge is "raw", looking as if it was cut off, rather crudely at that, with a blade. However, the raw edge of the canvas and the central position of Stalin's figure suggest that this is not part of a larger tapestry, but rather, was removed from the stretcher this way. The color of the threads does not look at all faded, compared to their color on the verso. Sadly, the natural-fiber canvas shows some uneven stretching, creating wrinkles in the tapestry. We hope that they can be smoothed out over time by stretching the canvas properly with due patience and skill.

However, even with all the wear and irregularities detailed above, the tapestry presents exceptionally well, is obviously quite unique and will look very impressive on the wall above a collection of WW2 memorabilia.
