The artwork is is finely detailed and of the highest artistic quality. Our search for the sculptor based on the initials "ЛК" next to the portrait yielded the name of Lev Kerbel (Лев Ефимович Кербель, 1917 - 2003), a renowned Soviet and Russian sculptor and educator, laureate of Stalin's and Lenin's Prizes, Hero of Socialist Labor, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts (1988 - 2003), famous for a multitude of sculptural works in the style of socialist realism including statues of Lenin, Karl Marx, and Gagarin, among others.
Having said that, we have to add that the handwriting of the initials on the plaque differs slightly from what we could see on photos of his other works. Hence, we cannot claim with certainty that the plaque was made by Lev Kerbel. Although, of course, it is quite possible, and the quality of artwork is worthy of his talent.
In excellent condition. The bronze finish is intact and shows mild attractive patina in recessed areas, emphasizing the 3D effect of the bas-relief and adding to the air of age and authenticity of the plaque. The original steel hanging loop on the back is just slightly rusted and will serve its purpose for many more years.
Please note that the medal in our photo is for size reference.
