A good amount of the original gilt finish is still present in the recessed areas of the state emblem. The screw post is full length, nearly 12 mm, and includes an original Moscow Mint screw plate. The rivets are tight; as is often the case, the star can rotate slightly around its axis if pushed but will remain in place if undisturbed. Although this is not a rare badge, it is quite hard to find one in as nice a condition as the example offered here.

The badges of this type were issued during the 1961 - 1982 period to graduates of any of the Soviet "Highest Military Schools" (Vysshee Voennoe Uchilische, best translated as Intermediate Level Military Academy.)
