Of some interest is the fact that most Russian-speaking people believe that "stopka" comes from "sto" (100 in Russian) because it fits 100 ml of liquid. However, the word "stopka" had been in use well before the metric system was introduced in Russia. It actually comes from the antique Russian measure of volume stopa ("стопа"), used for measuring volume of paper and liquids.
