The painting depicts the scene of a detail of Red Army machine gunners in an active shootout using a Maxim machine gun and a rifle. Judging by the snow around them and their uniforms, this is likely to be a scene from the "Winter War" of 1939-1940, the invasion of Finland.
The color plate is in outstanding, excellent condition. The image itself is without a single blemish. The backing shows just barely-there corner bumps and a 1mm-thin line of discoloration along the top edge, probably from exposure to light. It is barely noticeable and absolutely not detractive.
Nikolay Aleksandrovich Pavlov (Николай Александрович Павлов) (1899 - 1968), was a Russian Soviet painter, master of graphic arts, illustrator, and arts educator.
