Medal for the Defense of Caucasus, Variation 1, 1940s issue.

In brass; measures 36.9 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 32.0 mm in width; weighs 17.4 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Variation 1 featuring a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.

The medallion is in outstanding, excellent condition - one of the best we have seen in recent years. The details are perfect and exceptionally crisp on both sides. The obverse is literally pristine showing no wear noticeable even under a 10x loupe, let alone the unaided eye. On the reverse, there are only some minuscule contact marks and a couple of nearly microscopic dings to the edge, all of it not detractive in the least. The original "gilt" mint luster is exceptionally well preserved and bright throughout - a very uncommon case for a WW2 medal.

The medal comes on original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. Note that its reverse shows a very uncommon logo of one the wartime manufacturers that subcontracted production of suspensions for the mint: Moskov's Molniya (aka Molnija) factory of the RSFSR NKMP (Narkomat of People's Commissariat of Local Industries). The ribbon is relatively recent, although it shows some wear. The connecting link has been cut but appears to be of the period. Overall, this is a truly superb example of the Defense of Caucasus Medal.
