Printed on rough paper often encountered in sketch books for pencil drawing, affixed by a thin line of glue along the top edge of the lithograph to a thin cardboard backing inside a printed frame. The title of the monument and name of the sculptor are printed under the lithograph on the right. The monument is a group of eight persons including Chapayev, one of the most famous heroes of the Civil War, on horseback with a sword raised high, and seven more people including one female, each from very different social backgrounds: a soldier, a peasant partisan, a sailor, a political commissar, - the diversity symbolizing the unity of the entire gamut of the Russian people fighting to defend the young Socialist Republic.

In excellent condition. No damage to the lithograph except for a couple of minuscule scuffs at the bottom edge and a small old crease at the left bottom corner which has flattened out and is barely visible. The backing cardboard is in excellent condition showing just very minor corner bumps, hardly noticeable and not at all detracting.

The monument was erected in the city of Samara (known as Kuybyshev in the Soviet times) in 1932 in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution. The monument was made in Leningrad and shipped to Samara. An exact copy of the monument was erected in Leningrad and can now be viewed near the Military Academy building in St. Petersburg. Of interest is the fact that the sculptor used faces of real people for the monument, that of Chapaeyev "belonging" to his son who looked very much like his father.

Matvey Manizer (1891 - 1966) was a famous Soviet sculptor-monumentalist, author of many massive monuments in the Socialist Realism style, glorifying various Soviet heroes and events. Of special note is that Manizer was trusted with making Stalin's death mask.
