In fair condition. The spine is missing but the gauze and glue of the binding is mostly intact although the cover boards and some internal pages are completely separated. It does not appear that any of the internal pages are missing but some pages, especially the separated ones, show small rips and other signs of wear along the edges. The paper is mildly age-toned and mostly quite supple. Overall, it feels that in good and patient hands the book can be repaired and restored to a very good condition, to be enjoyed for many more years.
Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814 - 1841) was a Russian poet, writer and painter as well as a military officer (his highest rank was captain) stationed in the Caucasus region, mostly the city of Pyatigorsk where he eventually died at the hand of someone Martynov whom Lermontov had teased to the point where Martynov challenged him to a duel. Even though Lermontov made it known that he would shoot into the air, Martynov aimed straight at the poet's heart and killed him. Lermontov was 26 years old. Lermontov belonged to the Romanticism movement and, as a poet is considered in Russia second only to Pushkin.
