The Soviet 7th Naval Squadron or as it was usually referred to as the Atlantic Squadron was created in 1968 specifically to counter the American Navy in the Atlantic. At the time, the Soviet Union engaged in an ambitious program of naval expansion aiming at nothing less than negating the American domination of the seas. The Atlantic Squadron in particular was to engage the US Second Fleet in the case of war (the humiliating Soviet defeat in the standoff over Cuba a few years prior probably played a major role in its creation). Initially the Squadron comprised several destroyers and a cruiser but it gradually expanded to include far more vessels including missile cruisers and even a brigade of naval landing ships. The brigade was disbanded only in 2005, after the Cold War was temporarily over and the bulk of the once mighty Soviet surface fleet had become rusting heaps of scrap metal.
