Bust of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, early 1970s.

In Silumin alloy; measures 7" in height, 10" in width, 5" in depth. Featuring a highly detailed hand and wind-blown cape or sash, composition of this statuette is far more complex and interesting than a typical run-of-the-mill bust. Excellent and dramatic likeness of the famous composer of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The 1812 Overture, perfect for display on a bookshelf, desk, or, better yet, on a piano mixed in with a few well framed family photographs.

Excellent and dramatic likeness of the famous composer of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The 1812 Overture, perfect for display on a bookshelf, desk, or, better yet, on a piano mixed in with a few well framed family photographs.

On the back, there is the name of the sculptor "L. Torich" and a 1966 year of the creation of the original model. (Full name of the sculptor is Leonid Mikhailovich Torich-Trapeznikov. He was a Leningrad artist and sculptor well-known for a series of propaganda posters he created in the city during the blockade. After the war, he designed a number of monuments of Lenin, Kirov and Lermontov, among others, that to this day decorate many Russian cities. Torich was also the author of at least one other bust of Tchaikovsky similar to one offered here but of less sophisticated design - and therefore easier for the Soviet foundries to mass-produce].

The front portion of the sash is engraved "To Fyodor Illarionovich Borisov, a veteran of the Patriotic War, from the team of the Ulyanovsk ? [the name of the enterprise is unclear], on the Victory Day of 9 May 1974". It is interesting to note that be it intentionally or accidentally, the engraver chose a font so light and unobtrusive that it blends with the texture of the statuette; at a distance, the text looks almost like sheet music and appears to be organic part of the design!

The statuette is in excellent condition, free of noticeable dings or scratches. There are minor whitish oxidation spots here and there, but the finish is overall even and attractive.
