Badge for Excellence in Naval Base Construction, 1950-1962.

Brass, enamels; 28.6 mm tall x 19.6 mm wide. Very nice quality piece with unusually detailed artwork.

Very fine to excellent condition. The enamel appears perfect to the naked eye, although a careful examination with a 10x loupe reveals a couple of tiny surface flakes to the white enamel and a minor amount of rubbing, mainly in the lower portion of the badge. The sky blue and dark blue enamel in the center, the dark blue edge and the red star are perfect. A good amount of the gilt finish remains on the reverse. Introduced in 1950 during the Stalin era, the badge was awarded for naval base work during the intense Cold War naval build-up. Relatively few were issued in the 12-year period until the badge was abolished in favor of the far more common unified badge For Excellence in Military Construction.
