This version of the badge was issued during its first two years of existence, when it was a purely Komsomol decoration. In 1975, it became a joint decoration by the Central Committee of Soviet Trade Unions and Central Committee of VLKSM. The medal was redesigned accordingly: it received the appropriate inscription on the reverse of the medallion, and the lettering "VLKSM" was removed from the suspension device. There was another, less drastic redesign in 1978. The first, VLKSM version of the Mentor of Youth Medal is very scarce.
