Russian Imperial Army General Staff Map of the Baltic Seacoast, 1914.
Shows Danzig, Beslin, and the westernmost area of East Prussia with the city of Elbing. This area was the target of the first, ill-conceived and disastrous Russian offensive of WW1.

The map was obviously printed in preparation for this offensive and it is interesting to see that the source for this 1914 military map was an 1886 map (marked in the lower left). Lack of sufficient reconnaissance - in particular on the German supply lines and railroads - is often cited as the main reason for the Russian defeat in East Prussia in August 1914.

Marked on the margin in the upper right

Marked on the margin in the upper right corner "Publication of the Military Topographic Department of the General Staff". Marked "Printed in 1914" on the lower margin, and shows Imperial double-headed eagle in the lower right corner. Scale 1:42000, 29" by 23" overall size. The map has minor wear to the upper margin but no significant tears. Has been folded for safe storage but shows practically no deterioration along the folds, still supple and solid. Its excellent overall condition is partly due to paper which is of heavier, higher quality stock than the more recent maps.

Extremely important and rare WWI document, suitable for framing as a compliment to an Imperial collection!
