The badge is in very fine to excellent condition. The only wear somewhat visible to the naked eye are a few tiny chips and flakes to the green enamel of the paulownia crest near the bottom. The ribbon is very clean; the metal hook and clasp on the ribbon are free of oxidation, and are affixed tightly.

The Order of the Rising Sun, the first national decoration of Japan, was established by the Council of State Decree of April 10, 1875. It can be bestowed on the military and civilians, Japanese and foreign, as a general order or merit.
