Commemorative Badge of the First Spartakiada (Sports Tournament) of the Nations of the USSR, 1956.
Silver-plated brass, enamels; measures 20.8 mm in height, 20.5 mm in width. Raised mint mark "MMD" to the reverse. A peculiarity of the artwork of this badge is a very "Germanic" (Arian?) features of the male and female athletes - one could almost suspect that they came off of a WW2 Nazi propaganda poster or badge! This was undoubtedly spotted and reported to the powers that be, so the badges of the later spartakiadas, although otherwise similar in design, have far more "Russian-looking" athletes.
