The 40th AAA Division was formed in 1943 in the Volga Military District and spent the rest of the war in the far north, initially as a part of the 7th Army, Karelian Front, and then 14th Army. It greatly distinguished itself in the final year of the war, receiving the Order of the Red Banner and an honorific title of Pechengskaya (i.e. "of Pechenga fame") added to its name.
