Positioned right on the border with Poland, the garrison of the Brest Fortress was attacked at the very first moments of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union at dawn of 21 June 1941. Completely surrounded, the garrison was able to hold their defense for over a month. In recognition of their superhuman heroism, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR decreed on 8 May 1965 to bestow on the fortress a unique honor, the title of Hero Fortress, the Gold Medal of Hero of the Soviet Union and Order of Lenin. On 25 September 1971, the memorial complex Brest Hero Fortress opened its doors.
